Chemical Peels Q&A

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels involve a solution containing safe levels of chemicals applied directly to your skin. The peel removes one or more layers of skin, depending on the strength of the chemicals used.

Once the layer of old skin is peeled away, the new skin underneath is smoother and more vibrant. Chemical peels can be used as an effective anti-aging treatment to resolve hyperpigmentation, brown spots, or scarring from acne.

The peeling process also facilitates new skin growth that leads to less wrinkled and more evenly toned skin.

What are the different types of chemical peels?

There are three main types of chemical peels:

Light peel

A light peel gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin, which can improve discoloration and remove rough, dry skin.

Medium peel

A medium peel penetrates the outer and middle layers of skin. It can help remove damaged cells and improve age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and moderate discoloration.

Deep peel

A deep peel is stronger than other types of peels, penetrating the middle layer of skin to produce dramatic improvement in your skin’s appearance. Since deep peels are intense, it should only be performed once or every few years.

What are some chemical peel options?

The VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel that can:

  • Treat hyperpigmentation and melasma
  • Reverse sun damage and signs of aging
  • Improve skin tone and texture
  • Clear acne and reduce acne scars
  • Stimulate collagen growth and elastin production

In the first few days following chemical peel treatment, your skin will look slightly tanned to red, and may feel a bit tighter. Previously pigmented areas might look slightly darker. As your skin starts the natural peeling process, your side effects should resolve with time.
